They say opposites attract. When Doug, a quiet self-taught barrel racer, and Tammy, an outgoing western pleasure competitor, met, it was love. Love for their horses, that is. But soon, the two were inseparable.
At 18, Doug was already a Congress Champion and High Point Champion in an event that he taught himself, barrel racing. Though he loved the sport, Tammy, an avid pleasure girl, peaked his interest in the much slower event. Doug worked for Roger Landis during his last year of youth competition, while Tammy rode with her long-time instructors, Brian and Tammy Mahoney.
When it was time to leave the youth ranks, both knew that this was more than a hobby for them. Training horses would be their life-long career.
After working for Hank Clason and Fritz Leeman Farm for two years, Doug moved to Clark Bradly's facility. While working for Clark, Doug took the slow controlled pace from pleasure and the fast agility of contesting and turned them into one, reining.
Two years after Doug and Tammy married in 1987, they started their own business. After starting out in Delaware, Ohio, the two relocated to their current facility in Powell, Ohio.
The past ten years have been great for the Rath family. In 1998, Doug and Tammy welcomed their first son, Brady. And in 2000 they added their second son, Trey. During that time, Doug earned both his AQHA and NSBA judging cards.
With multiple championships, high points, wins and top fives in AQHA, NSBA and NRHA competition, the Rath's are the complete package. From breaking and showing futurity horses to preparing all-around exhibitors, they offer training and guidance to a vast range of horses and riders. |
